POTENTIAL ENERGY APPLICATIONS

The concepts of statics are used in engineering when loads are determined for objects at rest or at constant velocity. This can involve structures, from buildings, to prosthetics, to airfoils.
It is important that the principles of statics are well understood by engineers. An engineering problem can be thought of as a word problem, similar to word problems solved in mathematics. Statics provides the basics by which the equilibrium equations that govern the problem can be derived and applied. Potential energy can be used in energy methods to determine equations of motion. It can also be used to determine work done on a system.
