VECTOR MATHEMATICS EXAMPLES

Consider the vectors: A =  <  − 5, 3, 0 > ,  B =  < 0, 5, 0 >  and C =  < 7, 0, 0 > , which are also illustrated in Fig. 1↓.

  1. Draw and solve for the resulting vector A + C

    Figure 2 Exercise 1.
    ANS: A + C =  < 2, 3, 0 >
  2. Draw and solve for the resulting vector B − C
    HINT: Remember that B − C = B + ( − C)

    Figure 3 Exercise 2.
    ANS: B − C =  < 0, 5, 0 >  + ( − 1) < 7, 0, 0 >  =  <  − 7, 5, 0 >
  3. Draw and solve for the resulting vector A + C + B
HINT: Same process as with two vectors, just add a third vector to the process.

    Figure 4 Exercise 3.
    ANS: A + C + B =  <  − 5, 3, 0 >  +  < 0, 5, 0 >  +  < 7, 0, 0 >  =  < 2, 8, 0 >
